When all of the beauty turns to pain When all of the madness falls like rain As long as we crash and we collide We will be gorgeous, you and I.
An NPC (or Non-Playing Character) is a minor character which is not held to the same posting requirement as a Full Activity Character or the Characters you create using the site’s Application.
NPCs are required to have a Play-By or celebrity face assigned to them to aid in player visualization. Only some NPCs are allowed to retain a Face Claim for these Play-By’s, however. For this reason, players are encouraged to use lesser known celebrities when creating an NPC to avoid the need for recasting if someone should choose to create a Full Activity Character using the same face. OUAN utilizes NPCs in the interest of storytelling. We allow for the creation and play of two specific types of NPC which are described below.
Single Player NPCs Some characters, even after their deaths, can still be used for interaction with characters in past threads and may be required from time to time for a role in a past plotline. These characters retain their face claims and accounts but a character cannot become a Single Player NPC after death unless they have responded to 6 Activity Checks or are being killed at the request of a site plotline.
From time to time, the staff may create a Staff Controlled Single Player NPC, such as the Source, who is necessary for some past interaction with active characters. So long as these characters are crucial to the overall site story arc, they may retain face claims and may have individualized accounts.
The rest of the Single Player NPCs will be minor characters that are used to build a background for one or more active characters. They are written by only one player and if others wish to use them in a scene, they must tag the player in question or obtain written permission to take control of them. These characters cannot retain a face claim. The player will be asked to assign a face to the character, but is highly encouraged to use one that is unlikely to be claimed by another member for a full activity character. If this occurs, the full activity character will be granted the face claim and the NPC will need to be recast. They are also not permitted to have individualized accounts.
Players may create Single Player NPCs when necessary, but can only retain 1 for every 3 Full Activity characters they play.
Multi-Player NPC These characters are visible in the background of recurrent threads. They have been partially developed, and may be used by several players in threads in the past or present. The creator of this NPC does not mind if others use it in their threads, so long as they stay true to the details outlined in his brief description in the NPC Listing.
Multi-Player NPCs cannot have a face claim, though they must a Play-By. Players who create these NPCs are encouraged to use less common faces because if a Full Activity character is created with their chosen face, the NPC will need to be recast. Because they are used by multiple players, these NPCs will also not have individualized accounts.
Players may create these types of NPCs whenever they like. They are requested to include their information in the NPC List, however, and should be cautioned against creating too many or ones that are so specialized as to not be needed by other players in the course of their threads.
